The Barking Bulldogs Debate Team traveled to CSU Long Beach to participate in the Pacific Championship Tournament held from February 23 to February 25. The team, lead by Tom Boroujeni, director of debate, had a successful showing and placed second in one of the three divisions of the tournament.
"I cannot ask for better students and debaters," said Tom. "They are dedicated and hard working. I am very proud of you all."
Quinten Levin, assistant coach, helped Tom Boroujeni with preparing teams and coaching at the tournament.
Nick Mirza and Aaron Lowe won five of their six preliminary rounds against Fullerton College, CSU Fullerton, and three teams from CSU Northridge. Mirza and Lowe advanced to the elimination rounds, where they defeated two teams from CSU Northridge in the quarter-final and semi-final rounds. Mirza and Lowe lost the final round to University of Nevada, Las Vegas and placed second in the Novice division.
Samantha Ratzlaff and Dalton Scrivner debated in their second tournament and won three of their six preliminary rounds against California Maritime Academy, CSU Northridge, and Fullerton College. They came one win short of advancing to the elimination rounds.
Primavera Martinez and Hunter Sansom debated in the Varsity division. They won three of the six preliminary rounds against CSU Fullerton, Arizona State University, and UC Berkeley. They also came a single win short of advancing to the elimination rounds and placed 8th in the tournament’s Varsity division. Primavera Martinez received the 10th speaker award in the Varsity division.
This past weekend, the Novice teams participated in the Western JV and Novice Policy Debate Championship held on the Fresno State campus, a tournament co-hosted by the Barking Bulldogs Debate Team with the Fresno State Debate Club.
Barking Bulldogs Debate Team is supported by ASI, the Communication Department, and the dean of the College of Arts and Humanities.
