A Poetry Workshop: Honoring SEA Language and Legacy
Hosted by the Kremen Research Center, the Southeast Asian Student Success Center, Asian American Studies, and Associated Students, Inc., this presentation by Dr. Victoria Gill explores the role of language in preserving Southeast Asian (SEA) identities and histories. Participants will engage with their linguistic heritage through creative activities and discussions on language maintenance, multilingualism and cultural narratives. The session will also cover research on literacy, education, and the impact of language in shaping both personal and collective identities. This space encourages storytelling, resilience and collaboration while highlighting the significance of language within Southeast Asian communities. The workshop provides an opportunity to advance research on linguistic access and educational support for Southeast Asian populations. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how language plays a critical role in cultural preservation and education in these communities. Everyone is invited to attend.
Humanizing and Decolonizing Research
In this presentation, Gill discusses what it means to do anti-colonial work in the social sciences, and the ways in which researchers engage in methodologies that center humanizing and decolonizing practices. Using an example of their own practitioner research, Gill will walk students through their entire qualitative research process.
