Sweet potatoes are part of a program that helps students develop entrepreneurial skills.
In collaboration with West Fresno Family Resource Center, the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is teaching students about urban agriculture and sustainability. Dr. Srinivasa Konduru (Agricultural Business) helped develop various activities to teach fundamental business concepts.
Students plant and harvest sweet potatoes from sweet potato slips donated by D&S Farms. The product is grown on an acre of land also donated by the African American Farmers Association.
Middle school and high school students participating in the program learn about creating a business plan for turning sweet potatoes into a product that can be sold.
Held off-campus, the Sweet Potato project is going on its third year in partnership with the Lyles Center this summer, starting July 10-August 2.
