California Government Code § 11135 requires the California State University system to ensure the Accessibility of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based on the Federal Government Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. In 2017, Section 508 was updated to address advancements in technology, and ICT must now conform with the W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, also known as "WCAG”.
The CSU Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) is the system’s commitment to make information and communication technology accessible to all students, employees and the general public, including those with disabilities. The initiative addresses accessibility on the web, in instructional materials, and in the procurement process.
As a member of the campus community, if you produce, maintain or edit content which can be obtained through a website or an email; prepare instructional materials; or are involved with procurement processes, you need to know about the ATI policy and how it is implemented.
For the web, we use both automatic reporting tools (like Compliance Sheriff) and manual evaluation techniques on a regular basis to assess the level of accessibility of our websites. Typically, when a problem is discovered through one of these methods it is remediated by Technology Services staff or is communicated to the content owner.
For instructional materials, our campus is using Ally for the LMS to assist faculty in making instructional materials accessible.
For procurement, all purchases of information and communication technology, regardless of funding source or cost, need to be reviewed according to the guidelines established by the CSU Accessible Procurement Process. More information about Fresno State’s implementation of the CSU’s standardized Accessible Procurement process can be found on the campus accessibility website.
