Dr. Victor Torres, professor of Chicano and Latino Studies, has been selected to be the new Faculty Athletic Representative, for a three-year term ending Jun 30, 2023.
As part of his duties, he serves in an advisory role for monitoring the functional performance of the athletics program as it relates to academics, rules compliance and student-athlete welfare. While the day-to-day activities of the program are under the direction of Director of Athletics Terry Tumey and his staff, Torres acts in a broader capacity, ensuring that the program remains in adherence to the policies of the athletics program, institution, conference and NCAA. He is aided in this process by the Senior Associate Director of Athletics, the compliance services team and the student-athlete services staff within Athletics, and staff within Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.
In addition, Torres, in partnership with the Senior Associate Director of Athletics, shares responsibility for ensuring that violations of conference and NCAA regulations are reported, as well as sharing any concerns regarding policy compliance and student-athlete welfare.
Lastly, in his role as the FAR, Torres is specifically charged with certifying the academic eligibility of all student-athletes. There are instruments of measurements such as graduation rates, graduation success rates, and academic progress rates that are derived from the retention, eligibility and academic status of the student-athletes.
Torres replaces professor Dawn K. Lewis of the Department of Kinesiology, who served in this role since 2011.
