Calliope Correia, instructional support technician for the Horticulture Nursery, is retiring Tuesday, Aug. 1, a position that she has held since March 2007.
She works with student assistants to manage the campus farm enterprise, which hosts Plant Science Department labs, student and faculty research and class projects, and raises plants sold at the Gibson Farm Market and at large sales in the spring and fall.
“I’ve enjoyed growing beautiful plants and flowers that go out into the community,” Correia said. “Growing and delivering flowers to folks on campus (through the Jars of Happiness program) was equally rewarding, and I am grateful to have met some of my most favorite people while working at Fresno State.”
The Fresno native first served as a nursery student assistant before she received a plant science undergraduate degree in 2002. She added an interdisciplinary studies master’s degree in plant science and rehabilitation counseling in 2015.
She has also hosted numerous workshops on plants and horticultural therapy. The unit was the first on the 1,000-acre campus farm to receive an organic certification for production for its herb and vegetable plant transplants (and one of 18 units that provide vital, hands-on training for students).
