For Sheila Gallagher-Price and Victor Olivares (Career Development Center), students are a top priority.
Gallagher-Price has over 29 years of dedicated service to Fresno State students. Olivares has 36 years. And it just keeps on getting better.
"I worked on campus as a student assistant while attending college and loved the college atmosphere so much, I decided I wanted to come back and be a part of the Fresno State family," Gallagher-Price said.
An alumna of Fresno State, Gallagher-Price holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration - Marketing Option. After serving as a degree advisor for years, she's now helping students market themselves for successful careers in her new position as the student employment specialist on campus.
Olivares — who holds a doctorate in educational leadership, a master's in social work and a bachelor's in criminology — has worked diligently to build bridges that bring resources to the campus community, such as mentoring, internships, scholarships and full-time employment opportunities.
"I build networks that serve the common goals of students and employers," he said. "Put in another way, I bring individuals together, often for the first time. In the end, it creates a partnership that centers on student career preparedness by developing internships and employment opportunities and professional mentors."
Arming students for rewarding futures is what Olivares and Gallagher-Price do at the Career Development Center. That includes helping students dress for success through donations from the campus and community to the Clothing Closet, which provides students with free professional and business casual attire for the workplace.
"Sheila and I serve as 'attire consultants,' assisting students in selecting a wardrobe that reflects their chosen industry," Olivares said. "This includes conversations about professional clothing fit, jewelry, showing students how to use a tie (various knots), shoe selection and overall fit."
Gallagher-Price loves giving students an extra edge.
"I see my most important responsibility as helping students prepare for their professional careers either by helping them find student employment while attending college or fitting them with appropriate professional clothing for an interview," she said. "My favorite thing is picking out the tie — the icing on the cake, I like to say!"
Community support for the Clothing Closet has come from the Central California Society of Human Resources Management and several retailers. The Fresno State Alumni Association has made connections with alumni donors.
"Over 1,200 students have received professional clothing from the clothing closet," Gallagher-Price said. "I remember a student came in needing the complete outfit for an interview with the company he wanted desperately. He was so confident when he left the clothing closet. Not only did he walk out with a suit and tie, but he came back to let us know he got the job!"
For Gallagher-Price, it is extremely rewarding to see students succeed.
Another rewarding thing in her life is her family.
"I have been married for 20 years to Michael (also a Fresno State alum) and have two awesome daughters (Lauren, 15 and Giulia, 12) who play volleyball year 'round, so our time is spent traveling to Northern California and Nevada for volleyball tournaments," she said.
Olivares starts his day early to make sure he can close the gap between students and the resources they need.
"I get up at 3:45 a.m. to work out at a local gym," he said. "I read research articles daily. I also read books related to personal growth."
Olivares and his wife have two sons, a daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters. They also have Domingo, a dachshund, and Turtle-Turtle, a (you guessed it!) turtle.
