Name: Kenneth Boling
Title: Community Service Specialist
Department: Department of Parking and Traffic Operations
Degrees: B.A., photography, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena; B.S., criminology, Fresno State
How long you have worked at Fresno State: 17 years
What is your most notable accomplishment in your field, and why was it important? Many years ago, at the age of 42, I completed the Peace Officers Training Academy. This was a personal goal and challenge. This demonstrated to others that age is only a number, not a limitation. I went on to work as a bailiff for Fresno County and a sergeant with the Table Mountain Police Department.
What are you most passionate about in your field and why? Seeing students of all ages achieve their goals of higher education. No matter what negative issues and events arise from our ever-changing environment, student achievement will always be with us in one aspect or another.
I also find interaction with faculty and the campus community very interesting, informative and entertaining.
What is a memorable moment you had at your job? As a CSS, duties and assignments can vary from traffic control, to campus security and of course the necessary evil of issuing parking citations. Mix these with Save Mart Center events and this list goes on and on. It is difficult to pinpoint just one. I’d have to say, in light of what we have all experienced this past year, the "daily health screening" checkpoints have been "memorable!" However, we provided a valuable service to our campus community. It also gave us the opportunity to get to know others on campus by their names and the departments they work in.
We were shown their appreciation through words of kindness, treats, drinks and many other forms of gratitude.
What do you like to do for fun in your spare time? What spare time? Spending time with my three German Shepherds, a puppy, takes up a lot of my spare time — pooper scooping, vacuuming dog hair, more pooper scooping!
Our 21-year-old daughter had to come home from CSU Northridge when COVID hit, so my wife and I have been experiencing the "joys" of online learning. It’s been so hard on students as well as teachers. I can’t wait to see the campus bustling with students again.
I have owned a '65 Corvair Monza for 43 years. We enjoy showing it in car shows and listening for the inevitable comments, “Did you know someone stole your engine?”, because the engine is in the back.
What is something interesting about you that most people don’t know? I was a professional photographer for 15 years and had a photography studio focusing on commercial photography.
I have several collections of what might be considered by some people as odd — over 500 coffee cans, over 1,300 wine corks and well over 1,300 film canisters.
I was a member of the Fresno State Marching Band back in the late 70’s. I was hoping my daughter would follow in my footsteps, however she chose to major in music at CSU Northridge. It would have been fun to march and play on the field with her during alumni night.
I am a COVID survivor! My wife and I had it last summer. Luckily, neither of us had to be hospitalized.
