Completed in 1894, the Old Fresno Water Tower, located at Fresno and O streets in downtown Fresno, stands 109 feet high. It is constructed of red brick in the American Romanesque style, with a water storage capacity of 250,000 gallons. It was in use until 1963.
The water tower was designed by George Washington Maher, a Chicago architect. The original design included a library on the second and third floors, but the library was not installed. In 2001, the second floor was removed and the interior of the tower remodeled. It now features a visitors' center. The remodeling also included an adjacent landscaped plaza and restroom building.
Today, the water tower is one of Fresno's most recognized architectural structures. Traci Obata has captured its enduring qualities in her stunning photos that celebrate the community of Fresno.
