A first-generation graduate, Ashley Alba is a trail blazer who reminds all of us of what we can achieve if we set our minds to it. Having graduated from Fresno State, she is now earning her master's degree while working in the Perkins Loans department.
Alba has a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and journalism and a minor in fashion merchandising. She is enrolled as a graduate student in the clinical rehabilitation and mental health counseling program, and has applied for the HEAL program — Higher Education Administration and Leadership.
"I enjoy the Fresno State community and being able to serve the students," she said.
Alba began her career on campus as a student assistant in Accounting Services in 2011. She graduated in 2013 and was rehired as staff in 2014.
"As a student assistant I learned a lot in this department and proved myself to be a dedicated employee for Fresno State," she said. "My journey at Fresno State has been remarkable."
During her undergraduate years, Alba was involved with Fresno State Focus (a student newscast) and wrote a few articles for the student newspaper, The Collegian. While in her master's program, she assisted in the the Ticket to Work office at Fresno State, helping individuals with disabilities find permanent, full-time employment.
"Being able to find permanent employment for one of my clients brought a deep sense of joy and gratitude," she said. "Knowing that there are jobs out there that are willing to give [people] a second chance brings so much hope to myself and clients as well."
While she likes to catch up on her "junk TV," Alba also enjoys getting on a treadmill to stay active.
In her spare time, Alba enjoys the company of her husband, her two kids and other family.
"When it comes to my family, I always take advantage of each day because I can never get those back," she said. "I also don't want to miss significant milestones of my kids."
Her children are Landon, who is 5 years old, and Avery, who is 4 months old. The family also has Maltese poodle named Lola.
