Modernization and renovations of major portions of the 1960s-era North Gym and South Gym buildings, which will benefit both academics and athletics, are expected to be completed this summer.
The project will reconfigure underutilized locker rooms (approximately 33,000 square feet) in the gyms and the spaces will be remodeled to provide new locker rooms for wrestling, men’s and women’s basketball, ROTC and staff.
The South Gym locker room will be reconfigured to provide locker rooms (men’s and women’s) for kinesiology classes, as well as space for a new kinesiology strength training room, which includes a heat chamber. Three new interdisciplinary classrooms and nine single-station faculty offices will be added. In addition, the project will address deferred maintenance and needs such as heating, air conditioning, electrical and plumbing.
A temporary locker room for women is located in Room 123 of the Physical Therapy and Intercollegiate Athletics Building. A temporary locker room for men is located in a modular facility on the west side of the North Gym, across from Warmerdam Field.
Some classes may need to be relocated to other buildings for the spring semester.
Estimated total project cost is $7 million (campus funds). The architect is S.I.M Architects and the general contractor is S.C. Andersen.
The Administrative Services team asks for patience with the expected noise, dust and inconveniences. When feasible, activities that are very disruptive will be performed during off-hours.
