The campus community is invited to a free presentation by History Department faculty Dr. William Skuban about the current U.S.-Venezuelan conflict.
The discussion will cover various dimensions of the recent U.S. military incursion into Venezuela to capture President Nicolás Maduro and bring him to the United States to stand trial on criminal charges and allegations, including involvement in drug trafficking and narco-terrorism.
Skuban will put this crisis into historical perspective and discuss its ramifications for the Venezuelan people and U.S. relations with Venezuela, Latin America and the Western Hemisphere.
He is an expert on Latin American history and U.S.-Latin American relations. He has taught and conducted related research on topics in Latin American history such as nationalism and nation-state formation, national identity formation, Latin American history in film, social revolution and church-state relations. His book, “Lines in the Sand: Nationalism and Identity on the Peruvian-Chilean Frontier,” was initially released in 2007 by the University of New Mexico Press, and will be re-released in a revised Spanish version in 2026.
