In celebration of changing its name from the Department of Art, Design and Art History to the School of Art, Design and Art History, the school is hosting the special exhibition, “Gifted: The Japanese Art of Kyōsai, Kyōsui and Kyōtei from the Richard E. Dyck Collection.”
Active from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, these artists worked and lived together in an era when Japan was transitioning to modernity. They were trained in ukiyo-e, a popular woodblock technique, and Kanō-school painting traditions. The Dyck collection represents one of the largest known corpora of works by Mano Kyōtei in the world. Throughout the gallery, bonsai trees from award-winning artist Masaaki Shibata and others complement the themes explored in the artwork.
The exhibit is sponsored by the Clark Bonsai Museum, the School of Art, Design and Art History and the Center for Creativity and the Arts.
Date: Thursday, Jan. 22
Time: 4 - 7 p.m.
Location: Phebe Conley Art Gallery and Courtyard
