One week of dating was all it took for Jessica and John Hannigan to know they loved each other.
As educators, they might have noticed that their first initials matched. But that's just one small clue that they were meant to be.
They both teach in the Educational Leadership Department for the Kremen School of Education and Human Development. John is an adjunct professor and Jessica is an assistant professor. John is also a school principal in Sanger Unified at Reagan Elementary School. Jessica used to be a school administrator at the school site and district office level in Central Unified.
When they met, even a defunct heater couldn't keep sparks from flying.
Having known of each other from the school administrator world, they scheduled a time to meet at his school to exchange resources and strategies on their areas of expertise.
Who would have thought romance was in the works when John helped Jessica develop literacy interventions and systems and Jessica helped him develop behavior interventions and systems?
"I remember it was freezing in his office that day," Jessica said. "The heater was not working, and all I could think of was how cold I was, but I did not want to stop talking to him."
After leaving his office, they continued their collaboration, but soon realized they were the perfect fit both personally and professionally.
"We committed to being partners for the rest of our lives and working together to help students all around the nation as a team," said Jessica. "And that is what we have done. We also are committed to raising our children: Riley, Rowan, and Baby John."
Riley and Rowan are Jessica's stepdaughters.
"I had the honor of helping raise them since they were young," Jessica said. "Baby John is one year old and a blessing to us all."
Married almost four years, John and Jessica chose an important location for the wedding: the Elderberry House.
"This was special to us because it was our first official date location," said Jessica.
There is no doubt that the match is a success, but just who gets to claim credit for it is still up for debate.
Since John and Jessica know a lot of the same professors and colleagues, many feel they were responsible for hooking the couple up: For example, Dr. Donald Wise (Educational Leadership Department) and Dr. Susan Tracz (Curriculum and Instruction) both feel they brought John and Jessica together.
"We just chuckle and let them think so," Jessica said.
