Name: Andrew Worth
Title: Director of Creative Services
Department: Athletics
Academic Degree(s): B.A. Broadcast Journalism, Fresno State
How long have you worked at Fresno State?
This is year seven of working in athletics.
Are you a Valley native?
I am not from the Valley. I picked Fresno State when I decided which college to go to. From 2010-2015 I was a student and haven't left the Valley since.
Are you part of a Bulldog family with generations of Bulldog graduates or current students?
I am not, yet! But one of our kids may go here one day! My wife has a long line of family who went here and even played sports here.
Do you have a campus mentor or someone who has helped you in your career?
Faith Sidlow is probably my biggest mentor who is still here from my time on campus as a student. On the other hand, I would not be here today and would not have gotten into Fresno State if it weren't for Thomas Heibert and everything he did for me.
Tell us about your department and what people may not know about it.
In the Athletics Creative Services department we overlook all videography, photography and graphic design efforts for the entire department. We also assist with all social media and marketing efforts for the department. Our small but mighty staff covers every single sporting event and is in charge of gathering and making all content that has to do with athletics. You will see us at every single event whether it's a full team or just one of us. We work basically every single day of the week from August all the way through till June.
What is your most notable accomplishment in your field, and why was it important?
Since the beginning of the 2020 football season, our creative staff and workers have covered every single event for athletics with at least one videographer and one photographer. We are in the middle of year four that no event has gone uncovered and it is a huge thing to say that our teams get the publicity they deserve and we haven't missed one event.
What are you most passionate about in your field and why?
Making and keeping our university relevant in the landscape of athletics is a huge thing me and my team are passionate about. But a bigger thing is just making the office space a welcome and inviting space where our coworkers and students feel comfortable and appreciated every single day and a place they want to come to every single day. Friendships and relationships in the office make your job more exciting and fun when you're doing it with people you care about.
What is a memorable moment you had at your job?
It's hard to pick one moment that stands out that is most memorable. Seeing our teams win championships and win big games is something that will always be exciting and memorable because they are achieving a goal they have worked so hard for all season. Just getting to shoot those moments and capture a historical moment is an awesome thing. Capturing history can't ever be done twice.
What is a memorable moment you had in class?
It's not class but we have student interns who work with us every semester and seeing them grow from brand new and very weary with camera gear and editing to being able to shoot and edit an entire event together in their own is one of the most fulfilling things for me as a director. It means we taught them all of the info necessary for them to successfully do our job and make something we can all be proud of.
What is your teaching style?
Trial by fire, but we control the burn. With shooting and editing there's no other way to learn than just doing it. So we tell them what they need to know and say "Ready, go!" and from there they learn how things start to work in their brain to figure out how to change and make things work. After that event, we sit down with them and break down the stuff they shot to figure out how they can do it better next time or replicate what they did well.
What is your favorite quote or saying?
If you're willing to do what's easy, life will be hard. But if you are willing to do what's hard, life will be easy.
What is the most interesting or unusual job you've ever had?
Definitely what I am doing now. I can say confidently that my job is not the same any two days of the week. I work on a wide variety of projects every single day and week and I've done some crazy things to keep our university as a department who competes with the best in the country.
What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?
Spend time with my friends and family, play ultimate frisbee, golfing, spending time at the lake, just being outdoors doing anything active and just around anything sports and athletics.
What is something interesting about you that most people don’t know?
I have been to 45 of 50 states thanks in large part to marching drum and bugle corps for seven seasons and teaching for two more after aging out. Music is a huge passion of mine and I wouldn't be here if it weren't for music.
