The African American Student Social Worker Association presents "Taste of Freedom," Fresno's first African American Living History Day. This free, one-day educational event celebrates the significant contributions of Buffalo Soldiers and African Americans in the Old West.
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet living historians portraying notable figures including members of the Iron Riders, Buffalo Soldiers, and influential individuals such as Biddy Mason (the first African American female millionaire), Bass Reeves (US Marshal), and Cathay Williams (the first woman to enlist in the US Army). The event will feature demonstrations of period-accurate uniforms, equipment, and music, offering insights into the lifestyles of Buffalo Soldiers and African American cowboys.
The family-friendly celebration will include hands-on demonstrations, food vendors, games, live folk musicians, and educational workshops. Living historians will also portray other significant figures including President Theodore Roosevelt, writer/cowboy Nate Love, and outlaw Isom Dart, among others.
Date: Saturday, March 22
Time: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Location: O'Neill Park, 2611 E. Barstow Ave, Fresno
