Fresno State professor emeritus Charles Shields passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Jan. 30.
Born July 19, 1944, Shields grew up in Hawthorne, south of Los Angeles. When he settled in Fresno, Shields helped develop the bachelor of fine arts Graphic Design Program, and owned Shields Design, before retiring in 2016.
Shields received his bachelor of fine arts and MFA from the Art Center College of Design. His professional work comprises many diverse projects including illustrating a cover for Rolling Stone magazine, illustrating a book that received the New York Times “Children’s Book of the Year” award and designing props for a Steven Spielberg movie.
