Henry Madden Library invites faculty, staff and students to enjoy #OwnVoices Storytime on Instagram Live featuring beautifully illustrated picture books from the Arne Nixon Center for Children’s Literature and the Teacher Resource Center. Perfect for those at home with young children (but fun for those without!), our storytimes are part of the Library’s Virtual De-Stress Fest for Fall 2020. The term “Own Voices” describes a book that features diverse characters and perspectives written by an author who shares those identities.
Stories will include:
Maybe Something Beautiful: how art transformed a neighborhood by F. Isabel Campoy - Mira lives in a gray and hopeless urban community until a muralist arrives and, along with his paints and brushes, brings color, joy, and togetherness to Mira and her neighbors.
Mali Under the Night Sky: A Lao Story of Home by Youme Landowne - The true story of Lao-American artist Malichansouk Kouanchao, who walked with her family from Laos to Thailand when she was 5 years old.
Alma and How She Got Her Names by Juana Martinez-Neal - When Alma Sofia Esperanza José Pura Candela asks her father why she has so many names, she hears the story of her name and learns about her grandparents.
And more!
