The Henry Madden Library Employee Engagement Committee presented the inaugural HML Annual Awards to the following exceptional employees at their Virtual Staff and Faculty Retreat on Aug. 11, 2020. The awardees were nominated by their co-workers and selected by representatives of the faculty and staff. Dean Del Hornbuckle presented the awards with the following comments to each awardee. Congratulations, Library Bulldogs!
Individual Excellence Award – Faculty - Britt Foster
Presented to a staff person who has made outstanding contributions toward fulfilling the Library’s institutional purpose. Award recipients have been nominated and selected by their peers for demonstrating consistent excellence in their support provided to the Henry Madden Library.
- I have been continuously impressed by Britt’s leadership. Her ability to collaborate with everyone and get projects done has been so inspiring. I find myself constantly learning how to be a better colleague due to her work in these groups. Her ability to listen, address concerns, and incorporate those concerns into actionable steps has been great to see. It provides a sense of structure and a common understanding which in turn helps me provide better service to my colleagues within the library.
- Britt is an amazing employee. She is always trying to better Research Services and she is always up to whatever tasks she is given. She is probably one of the hardest working people that I have ever met and she is such a joy to work with.

Bulldog Spirit Award – Jami Helwig

- Jami is the consummate team player - always helpful and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done and do it collegially, collaboratively and with good humor and graciousness.
- Jami is 100% a team player, unflappable, exuding sunshine, good spirits, and positivity in every single interaction I’ve had with her! She definitely has a roll-up your sleeves work ethic, and she is willing to do whatever it takes to make our library a giant success.
Pushing Forward Award – Keaton Johanson
Presented to a staff member who has developed and/or implemented an effective use of technology or innovative thinking that enhances library services and/or operations.
- Keaton is a forward-thinker, maker, tinkerer and he is continuously thinking about how we can make new technology accessible to our students in Music & Media.
- Keaton has taken on both the video studios and the XR technology as his projects, and the library is already starting to receive recognition for the importance of what we have to offer in these areas.
Individual Excellence Award – Staff - Heather Parish
Presented to a staff person who has made outstanding contributions toward fulfilling the Library’s institutional purpose. Award recipients have been nominated and selected by their peers for demonstrating consistent excellence in their support provided to the Henry Madden Library.
- She has been such a positive force by teaching us how to tell our story, promote ourselves and really engage with social media and putting ourselves out there in the academic community.
- Heather has a great sense of humor and works with all staff in a very seamless, fun manner that draws everyone in and makes them feel excited about the work. She has made a major breakthrough here and has made a significant difference in how we are communicating and growing together, and that is the mark of excellence.
Behind the Scenes Award – Maria Peña
Presented to a staff member who makes consistent contributions that positively impact a department, the library, and/or library users but may not receive much public recognition as their work is often unseen or is not always a prominent service.
- Maria is always willing to help others and give them all the information or tools that they need. She is consistently humble, always a pleasure to work with, and has a turn-around rate that always astonishes.
- Maria Peña consistently helps many of the library’s units through her quiet dedication and excellent work ethic. She is always looking to improve library services with an eye toward both the present and future educational needs of users and researchers. Maria is a natural, generous, and kind teacher with bushels of patience.

Outstanding Achievement by a Team Award – Circulation & Tech Lending
Presented to a group that has meritoriously completed a special project or responded to a particular library need in the last year.
- Since the beginning of the pandemic, this team has worked to continue to provide much-needed resources and technology to our students, faculty and staff. They are still listening to students and addressing their changing needs, ordering additional technology items, for example, to help students be successful under the current conditions.
- The Circulation team was literally at the front lines of this pandemic for the library. As such they were the most useful and insightful in perfecting new best practices, training and directing staff from other departments, and guiding library patrons under constantly changing conditions.
- Not to mention the great leadership they demonstrated to their own student assistants who were also affected by the outbreak.
- They represent the best of what libraries can offer when they're needed the most.
