Dr. Jim Marshall, dean of of the Division of Research and Graduate Studies, will be retiring in December. Marshall will leave behind a distinguished career, having served numerous roles over his 31-year tenure at Fresno State including as dean of Research and Graduate Programs for the past seven years. Since 2014, he has led numerous innovative initiatives to improve graduate student success and to support faculty in winning grants. Under his leadership, the Division of Research and Graduate Studies has seen record setting grant awards in four of the past five years.
Prior to his current role, Marshall served the University as department chair, graduate coordinator, doctoral program director and associate dean. Marshall also willingly assumed additional leadership roles when called upon. He accepted interim roles as dean of the Kremen School of Education and Human Development, dean of the College of Health and Human Services, and most recently assistant to the interim provost where he performed many of the responsibilities of the vice provost’s position. His commitment to service to the University is exemplary and laudable.
Marshall has been consistently active in scholarship over the years. He authored or co-authored 34 articles, manuscripts, and book chapters since joining Fresno State in 1990. During this time, he served as principal investigator, co-principle investigator, and/or project director on over $15 million of grants from state and federal funding agencies. Many of these grants served the community by providing professional development opportunities for teachers and helped to contribute to diversifying STEM education.
Marshall's last day as dean of the Division Research and Graduate Studies is Dec. 23. He will be on an administrative sabbatical in spring 2022, and will begin a faculty FERP role in August of 2022. Academic Affairs will issue a call for service to secure an interim dean of Research and Graduate Studies this fall, and plans to launch a search for a permanent dean later in the academic year.
