Dr. Arthur Wint, professor emeritus of criminology, a great friend and colleague to many of us, passed away Aug. 15 after a long, dignified battle against Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as ALS. He started at Fresno State in 1986 and was a seminal figure in our department’s evolution in becoming what it is today. Wint was also a member of the College Church of Christ for 38 years, serving as a deacon and elder emeritus.
"Art was a calm, and calming, presence in the department. He was kind, caring and gentle, known for his wise counsel and comforting hugs. Above all else, and not surprisingly, he dedicated his life to peace," said Dr. Peter English, chair of the Department of Criminology.
He participated in the Faculty Mentoring Program, served on the College of Social Sciences Personnel Committee and the Academic Senate Executive Committee, and was an ardent fighter for Black faculty and staff rights. He volunteered his time to many other University committees.
He leaves behind Carlotta, his wife of 51 years, four children and 11 grandchildren, with one on the way. Services were held last week in Fresno.
