Monique Bell wanted to become a business professor because of The PhD Project, which promotes workplace diversity by helping minorities attain their doctorates in business.
Her love of marketing started in college.
"I have always loved reading and writing, so I learned about marketing as a creative writing college intern at a major utilities corporation," she said. "I had no idea that you could get paid for doing something as enjoyable to me as using your imagination and translating ideas to reach others."
On campus since 2013, Bell earned her doctoral degree at Drexel University in Philadelphia, where she received the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation (Social Sciences) Award and the inaugural Melvin Stith Marketing Doctoral Dissertation Grant. Bell got her master’s degree from the University of Baltimore and her bachelor’s from Morgan State University.
She is currently an associate professor with tenure in the Department of Marketing and Logistics in the Craig School of Business where she teaches promotions principles and practices and marketing concepts. Bell also developed the social media marketing course.
"What I most like about my position is that I get to share my excitement for and knowledge of the dynamic world of marketing with students,” Bell said. “I also enjoy being able to engage my curiosity through academic research."
Bell, who was selected for the 2019-20 President’s Leadership Academy and received the 2014-15 Provost Award for Promising New Faculty, studies branding and marketing communications. She also recently received the Craig School Faculty Service Award.
A past president of the Black Faculty and Staff Association, Bell serves on a variety of committees, including the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force and the AACSB Assurance of Learning Task Force. She has chaired two annual marketing events at Fresno State — the Marketing Boot Camp and Marketing Forum (open to all majors). She also co-chairs the American Marketing Association student chapter and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Bell has son in elementary school who is becoming fluent in Spanish, which he began learning at the Fresno State Huggins Center.
When not teaching, Bell loves taking advantage of all the natural wonders in California.
"I enjoy nature and exploring all that California has to offer with my son," she said.
