Dr. Joseph I. Castro, the eighth president of Fresno State and a native of the San Joaquin Valley, passed away on Aug. 24, at the age of 58.
Dr. Castro made history as the first person of color to serve as president of Fresno State and later as the first Valley native, first Californian and first person of color to lead the California State University system as chancellor. His story — from Hanford to Stanford and back to serve the Valley — inspired and resonated with many, and he dedicated much of his professional life to expanding access to higher education. During his time at Fresno State, while reminding us to “Be Bold,” he launched initiatives focused on student success and social mobility, and championed support for first-generation students.
As is customary when a former president passes, the university will lower its flags to half-staff in memory of Dr. Castro.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary; his sons, Isaac and Jess; his daughter, Lauren; and his daughter-in-law, Marilyn.
The family of Dr. Castro announced his passing on his website. Read more about him here.
