Having a live mascot can be a real asset for the University. After all, a Bulldog can be man's best friend, as Asheline Beeson has learned. As the community relations and new media coordinator for the Alumni Association, she spends most of her time at work with Victor E. Bulldog III or in promoting him.
Asheline graduated from Fresno State as the 2015 Fresno State MCJ Outstanding Public Relations Graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications and Journalism with a Public Relations option.
"In my time as a student, I had some amazing opportunities like getting to work with the Central California Women’s Conference and at the Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship," she said. "A few months after graduation I was hired as the social media coordinator at Catalyst Marketing Company, where I handled social media communications and marketing for a number of clients for a little over a year. Then, I started working at Fresno State in September 2016. I was really excited about the opportunity to come back and work for my alma mater."
Inspired by her mom, who also has worked in the PR field, Asheline was personally drawn to her field because of the story-telling aspect.
"I have had the opportunity to work for some great organizations who do wonderful work and it is so much fun to be able to share what they are doing with the public through different media like the news, print or social media," she said.
She loves that in current job she gets to spend a lot of time with Victor E. Bulldog, but she loves even more that she gets to help grow his brand and presence as Fresno State’s live mascot.
"People in our community love Victor E., and it is very inspiring getting to see that firsthand," she said.
Her job is to create content for, monitor and maintain all social media platforms for the Fresno State Alumni Association. With help from a student videographer, she puts together videos and marketing material for Alumni Association events.
"A major part of my job is to act as Victor E. Bulldog’s publicist," she said. "I handle all of his social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat), maintain his calendar and take him to appearances."
She feels like Victor’s appearances are probably her most important responsibility.
"As Fresno State’s live mascot, it is important that he is out at a variety of University events spreading Bulldog spirit," she said. "It is also a lot of fun to see first-hand how much Victor E. means to students, staff, faculty and the community. People light up when they see him and tell me stories about the first time they met Victor E. That is why Victor E. Bulldog is an important responsibility in my day-to-day, because of the spirit he brings to campus and to the community."
She believes her role with Victor E. Bulldog is important because she can take that feeling of Fresno State pride people have when they see Victor and amplify it using social media and other media opportunities.
Part of that is making sure the community has access to him.
"Because Victor E. is a live animal there are many guidelines that had to be put into place," she said. "However, one guideline that we plan to stick with is that Victor E. Bulldog is free to on-campus entities. We wanted to make sure Victor E. is easily accessible to the campus, so his use on campus comes free of charge."
When not hanging out with Victor E., Asheline spends time with her own dog, a Queensland Heeler named Yankee.
Asheline's horse, Lucy, is her other furry friend. "I have been riding nearly my entire life and was a member of the Fresno State Equestrian Team, but now I ride for fun," she said. "The barn is where I go to clear my head, so I try to spend my free time there, especially if it is a hectic week."
When not spending time with animals, Asheline can be found blogging.
"I have a personal blog based on fashion and lifestyle for fun," she said. "I try to use my blog as a place where I can experiment with new skills that I can also utilize in my professional career."
Currently, she is on the board for the Public Relations Society of America's Central California Chapter and sits on both the Social and Sponsorship committees for the organization.
