Fresno State had more than one scorcher of a sunrise above the corn fields this summer. Temperatures rose above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in June and kept on rising through July to sizzling temps around 108° F. More hot days are ahead!
By the way, corn is a crop that loves warmth. Soil temperatures of 85° to 90° F are considered acceptable for planting a healthy crop of corn. Cool conditions can stress corn and damage seedling health. But even corn has its limits. When temperatures go over 95° F, corn growth slows. High night temperatures can also affect corn adversely and reduce corn yield.
Other crops fare worse than corn in the heat. This year, Western FarmPress reported that triple-digit temps were taking a toll on California crops.
