Introducing the Interim President's Newsletter, publishing the first Monday of every month.
We have so much to be proud of! Through our collective efforts, combined with the support of our donors and alumni, our students become visionary leaders who enrich every facet of Valley life and beyond.
This is the purpose of the President’s Newsletter: To showcase and celebrate the breadth, scope and depth of Fresno State’s momentum, accomplishments and impressive impact.
In reading about these achievements, you will share a glimpse of my perspective: Fresno State represents vitality, creativity, vision and demonstrable change. Such transformation and energy comes from our faculty, staff and students who invest of themselves — consistently and proudly — to embody the bold excellence that now characterizes Fresno State!
Academic Affairs
Fresno State continues to excel in scholarship that advances knowledge and transforms our communities. Despite COVID-19 challenges, faculty continue their critical work and provide opportunities for students to engage in research. These include Dr. Rory Telemeco from the Biology Department, who is working to save a local endangered species. Through the talent and hard work of faculty, staff and students, research funding grew to a record $46.7M last year, the third highest in the CSU system.
Administration and Finance
Good news! Construction of the Resnick Student Union has restarted. We project opening in fall 2022. The Central Utility Plant Replacement Project will begin in June 2021 and continue for three years. This is the CSU’s first P3 (Public-Private-Partnership) major utility infrastructure project. It includes replacement of antiquated equipment and all hot water and chilled water piping, and installation of photovoltaic solar panels. Once completed, the project will reduce our energy consumption by approximately 30%.
Athletics
One consequence in navigating COVID-19 was our inability to have spectators. We have missed your support! We hope our digital platforms help to fill the void of not being able to attend our games in person. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Student Affairs and Enrollment Management
The Office of Admissions and Recruitment hosted a virtual Preview Day on March 20 — the largest single event for prospective fall students. A total of 3,933 students attended, with 381 accepting admission. Students had access to 49 virtual booths (academic programs, student organizations, student services/programs, etc.) and opportunities to attend 22 live and five on-demand presentations. They also had access to attend live virtual campus and farm tours.
Technology Services
We deeply appreciate your care, commitment and support for Fresno State students and community. This past year has truly been a unique experience. We have actively explored many inquiries relating to the increased use of technology to support our campus community. We are grateful we have been able to increase our investment in technology and innovation to support student success. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any ideas or questions.

The 2021 Top Dog Alumni Awards will be a one-hour special, televised on ABC30 at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 18. This year we are excited to celebrate three awardees from our campus family: Arthur Safstrom Service Award winners, retired faculty member Elizabeth Shields and the late John Shields, professor emeritus; and Craig School of Business honoree Debbie Adishian-Astone (1988, ’94), vice president for administration and chief financial officer.
