The Fresno State Symphony Orchestra will close its season with the annual Spotlight on the Students concert on Saturday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fresno State School of Music Concert Hall.
The concert, which highlights the achievements of music students at Fresno State will feature the world premiere of Paracosm, written by our competition student Brandon Hatch. The piece explores the relationship between the fantasy worlds we create and the real world we live in. The harsh, unpredictable nature of reality is juxtaposed with the comfort and stability of fantasy. Through the musical conflict between these two spaces, the work explores how the worlds we imagine can inspire us to build a better world. The piece will be conducted by graduate conducting student, Duncan Smith.
The orchestra will close the season with one of the most iconic and beloved works for symphony orchestra: Gustav Holst’s The Planets. These seven movements represent a journey through life, from both a chronological perspective as well as a spiritual one. Holst’s extraordinary range of color and expression makes The Planets an engaging and intense listening experience.
