Join us for International Earth Day on Monday, April 22. Facilities Management staff and other campus partners will be on the Maple Mall to share how you can help the campus improve its waste diversion efforts.
Currently, the campus diverts 55% of reusable waste from the landfill. The California State University system’s goal is for all campuses to increase this rate to 80% by 2020. Reducing campus waste and reaching the 2020 diversion goal can be reached through simple changes in our processes, education, culture and student engagement.
Facilities Management has already started this by “Blue-ing the Campus.” Blue receptacle bins are being placed around campus and in select buildings, next to trash cans, to begin a multi-stream sorting process. Now, you can do your part to separate recyclables from landfill waste when you dispose of trash. Join us on April 22 to learn more.
Multiple campus departments are responsible for waste management: Facilities Management, Auxiliary Services, Athletics Department, Farm/Ag Operations and the Save Mart Center.
Current sustainable practices on campus to reduce waste and separate reusable or recyclable items from the landfill include:
- Facilities recycles approximately 550 tons of tree pruning and chipped wood annually. It is sent to co-generation and compost/mulch facilities.
- Farm/Ag Operations composts about 2,000 tons of livestock waste annually to use as a soil nutrient source for the production fields.
- Farm/Ag Operations recycles scrap metal byproduct from the automotive, farm maintenance and ag mechanics shops.
- The Warehouse recycles scrap metal.
- University Dining Hall diverts all wet food waste to composting.
We are excited to share our efforts with you and hope you can join us on April 22.
