Jessica Alejandre, a junior majoring in Psychology, has been named a 2018 Newman Civic Fellow.
The Newman Civic Fellows Award, established by Campus Compact, honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities across the country. Through service, research and advocacy, Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better themselves, address the root causes of social issues, and effect mechanisms for creating lasting change.
Alejandre, who is originally from Atwater, Calif., began volunteering as a Service Experience with Richter Volunteer Events (S.E.R.V.E.) committee member in order to share her passion for civic engagement with others. As a S.E.R.V.E. member, she has planned, implemented, and led campus sponsored one-day service events. These events provide her student peers, staff, faculty, and alumni of the university the opportunity to engage with their community through service. Alejandre has been instrumental to the success of these events, which have over 100 volunteers at each day of service. She is passionately invested in creating opportunities for others to be involved in their community.
Additionally, Alejandre has also taken the initiative to share the work she and her colleagues are doing as student leaders by submitting and being accepted to present at the IMPACT Conference and the Continuums of Service Conference. Through her conference proposals, Jessica hopes that others in the field of civic engagement and service-learning will be inspired by the meaningful one-day service experience her team has worked so hard to create at Fresno State.
Jessica Alejandre and others who have made exceptional commitments to Fresno State’s community service and service-learning efforts will be recognized at the annual Spirit of Service awards hosted by President and Mrs. Castro on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. in the Satellite Student Union.
